The Foundation is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that exists to raise supplementary funds for the Fairfax County Public Library and is committed to its mission statement of seeking financial gifts from individuals, organizations, foundations, businesses and corporations who have a vested interest in the quality of life of Fairfax County while encouraging continued and increased public tax-based support for the library.
Fairfax County has prided itself on offering a first-rate Library system that is proactive and community service oriented. In the early 1990s, when financial resources were strained and resulted in the loss of approximately 100 staff positions and the closing of three Library branches, Library management decided it was time to "think outside the box" in order to maintain the quality of service Fairfax County residents expected and to offer new programs and materials. A major initiative was the establishment of the Fairfax Library Foundation in 1994.
As you may know, our mission is to provide supplementary support to enhance Fairfax County Public Library programs and services for our community while reinforcing the need for continued and increased public support for the Library.
Since 1994, the Foundation has made enormous strides toward the enhancement of your library. The generosity of individuals, businesses and other organizations allowed us to enhance the collection and support numerous successful initiatives. For example:
- Library Literacy Outreach Programs for Preschool Age Children
- Renowned Author Presentations
- Recorded and Foreign Language Collections
- The Friends Scholarship Fund
- All Fairfax Reads
- Summer Reading Program
These and other Library Foundation supported programs are essential to continue the first-rate library system following a 15 percent budget reduction in fiscal year 2010. As a result, programs have been reduced and more than 330 library staff positions have been eliminated. Fairfax County Public Library Director, Sam Clay stated that, "The library will continue to offer County residents a state of the art library system and an exceptional and knowledgeable and dedicated staff."
Now more than ever, private donations to the Fairfax Library Foundation are needed to enhance your library!
