Northwest Federal Credit Union Foundation Funds Children’s Financial Literacy via Fairfax Library Foundation
Fairfax, VA –Juri Valdov, Northwest Federal Credit Union Foundation (NWFCU Foundation)
Chairman and Linda Rogus, NWFCU Foundation Executive Director, donated children’s
financial education themed books to Fairfax Library
Foundation to benefit the Patrick Henry Library on October 22
in celebration of Fairfax Library Foundation month.
In addition, the NWFCU Foundation followed up on November 21 with an
additional $500 to continue Patrick Henry Library’s summer reading
program branch events that were preliminarily cut due to budgetary
constraints. Others on hand for the occasion included Roberta Longworth,
Fairfax Library Foundation Executive Director, Shannon Seglin, Patrick
Henry Library Youth Services Manager, and library branch users.
Both donations were part of an all day financial education event, which included visits by children’s author Sam X. Renick and his sidekick Sammy ‘the Saver’ Rabbit to Stenwood Elementary School, St. Joseph School, and the Chesterbrook Academy in Northern Virginia. The event followed last year’s successful financial education day, where the NWFCU Foundation donated financially themed children’s books to the new Oakton Library.
“In the current fiscal climate, it is undeniable that financial literacy is a necessity,” says Roberta Longworth, executive director of the Fairfax Library Foundation. “Northwest Federal Credit Union Foundation sets a fine example to other financial institutions that may also help children and young adults to develop positive monetary habits through education.”
Reading his award-winning book, It’s a Habit Sammy Rabbit, children’s author Sam X. Renick spoke to over 640 students about the importance of saving money. After reading his book, Sam X. Renick and Sammy Rabbit lead students in dancing and singing about saving money, a special treat for the students! To drive home the financial education lesson, each student received a copy of Sam X. Renick’s award winning book It’s a Habit Sammy Rabbit, donated by the NWFCU Foundation. Additionally, the NWFCU Foundation is sponsoring an essay-writing contest. To enter, each student has the opportunity to write a story about the financial education lessons learned. Winners will win a book scholarship.
