Fairfax Library Foundation Board Represents Community Diversity

"Fairfax, VA –The Fairfax Library Foundation Board, comprised of Directors representing a variety of backgrounds and experience, is now under the leadership of Alvah T. Beander, a certified personal property appraiser in Alexandria specializing in African, African American and African Diaspora art and former president of the Friends of the Sherwood Regional Library. Ms. Beander led the planning effort for Art in the Pages, the first-ever public art sculpture project in Fairfax County and the City of Fairfax. Patrick J. Dexter, Headquarters Community Relations Advisor for ExxonMobil serves as Vice Chair. The slate of officers includes Burke resident, Susan C. Thorniley, Coordinator for Library Information Services with the Fairfax County Public School System as the Secretary and Jeffrey M. Armstrong, Financial Advisor of Ameriprise Financial Advisors, Inc. in Vienna as the organization’s Treasurer. Officers serve two year terms through June 30, 2010. The Fairfax Library Foundation Board of Directors elected Susan C. Harman from the Northern Virginia Community College Educational Foundation in Annandale and Springfield resident, Lt. Col. Richard T. Brady of the United States Marine Corps as new Directors.

“I appreciate the opportunity to serve as the Chair of the Fairfax Library Foundation,” says Beander. “The Foundation enhances the services of the Library system through funding valuable scholarship programs, live online Homework Help, literacy outreach, technology, Summer Reading Program and author presentations. The Foundation Board is poised to continue working with the library, volunteers, Friends Groups and other members of the library family to ensure that our library system continues to advance and is a vital community resource.”

The board also elected two returning Directors for a second term.  Stephanie Y. Abbott of Reston and Mary Myers, Director of the Inova Alexandria Hospital Foundation will serve a three year term.

Charles A. Fegan of Burke served the library since 1993 and is now the Chair of the Fairfax County Public Library Board of Trustees and an ex-officio Director of the Fairfax Library Foundation Board for fiscal year 2009. Library Trustee, Willard O. Jasper will represent the Library Board on the Fairfax Library Foundation Board of Directors. The Foundation’s immediate past chair, Joan Kane, founder and Director of Investment Planning Solutions LLC will also serve a one year term as ex-officio Director.

Fairfax County Public Library Foundation, Inc., doing business as Fairfax Library Foundation, is a private, nonprofit corporation committed to providing supplementary support to the Fairfax County Public Library. The Foundation, while reinforcing the need for continued and increased public support for the library, serves as a catalyst for attracting private funding from individuals, businesses, organizations and foundations to enhance library services for our community.
