MLS Scholarships
The Fairfax Library Foundation's Friends Scholarship program provides several Masters of Library Science scholarships each year, dependant on the availability of funds. The awards are for $3,000 plus a special Edwin S. Clay, III award in the amount of $3,500.
The Edwin S. Clay, III scholarship has been named in Edwin 'Sam' Clay's honor as a special recognition of more than twenty-five years of exceptional service and dedication to Fairfax County Public Library. Sam leads our library system that has been named among the "Top Library Systems in the Nation."
Congratulations to these Masters of Library Science students at Catholic University of America, University of North Texas, Florida State University and the University of South Carolina who were awarded MLS Scholarships in 2010!
The 2010 recipient of the Edwin S. Clay, III (ESC) Academic Scholarship is Elizabeth Meanor, library aide at the Reston Regional Library, studying at the Catholic University of America.
"Customer service is about meeting the patrons where they are, and helping them get where they want to go. This requires non-librarian jargon, and teaching information literacy, to help patrons find the nuggets they seek buried in the information available."
Sarah McShane, page manager at the City of Fairfax Regional Library, studying at the University of North Texas.
"The betterment of the County’s citizens through access to free information, education, and entertainment materials while guided by experts is truly an amazing aspect of our job."
Marcia Ferreira-Hennessey, library reference assistant at the Patrick Henry Library in Vienna, studying at Florida State University.
"My short term plan…is to keep contributing to the betterment of the library services towards the non-English speaker community."
Shari Randall, youth services information assistant at the Kingstowne Library in Alexandria, studying at the University of South Carolina.
"I believe there are few literacy generators as powerful as public libraries, and this belief fuels my commitment to a library career."
Continuing Education Scholarships
The Fairfax Library Foundation's Scholarship Program provides several full or partial scholarships of up to $1,000 each. The awards support the continuing education of individuals within the Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL) system.

Renee Edwards, Early Literacy Outreach Manager with Fairfax County Public Library Administration, to participate in the Advanced Literacy Foundations and Instruction Seminar.
Sondra Eklund, Youth Services Manager at the Herndon Fortnightly Library, to attend the annual conference of the American Library Association.
Jill Johnson, Youth Services Librarian at the Centreville Regional Library, to participate in the What’s New in Young Adult Literature and How to Use it in Your Program seminar offered by the Bureau of Education & Research.
Janice Kuch, Manager of the Access Services branch (providing library services to individuals with disabilities) to attend the National Conference of Librarians Serving Blind & Physically Handicapped Individuals presented by the National Library Service.
David Mercer, Library Page at the Centreville Regional Library to to attend the annual conference of the Virginia Library Association.
Matthew Moffett, Librarian at the Pohick Regional Library to attend the annual conference of the American Library Association.
Emily Riley, Librarian at the Burke Centre Library to attend the annual conference of the American Library Association.
Kerri Zuiker, Library Aide at the Centreville Regional Library to take the American Sign Language and Interpreter II course.
