Summer Reading Program Winners

Summer is a perfect time to read a good book! Numerous studies have found that library visits, the number of books read, and the amount of time spent reading during summer vacation all contribute to a child's success when school resumes in the fall. The Fairfax County Public Library’s (FCPL) Summer Reading Program is held in cooperation with the Fairfax County Public Schools and encourages students to keep their reading comprehension skills sharp during summer vacation. Participants who finish the required number of books are congratulated on reaching their reading goal with a coupon book that may be redeemed for many valuable prizes.

In 2008, Summer Reading Program finishers were also entered into drawings for the chance to win additional prizes. Many won a rare 5” high Art in the Pages mini-statuette that could be artistically designed and painted. See finished sculpture designs of some of those winners below.

Many thanks to ExxonMobil for underwriting the mini-statuettes, paint, and brushes; and to Baker & Taylor for donating the gift bags. Thanks to each of the Summer Reading Program participants for making the library a part of their summer fun!
