National Library Week
Library Foundation Celebrates National Library Week!
National Library Week is celebrated
every year by libraries throughout the country during the month of April.
In 2009, it was celebrated April 12-18. April 14 was recognized as National
Library Worker's Day. This tribute is sponsored by the American Library
Association.
In celebration of National Library Week, a miniature Art in the Pages statuette was presented to the Fairfax County Public School Board, and Superintendants from the Fairfax Library Foundation. Many school librarians participated in the presentation that was made by Bobbi Longworth, Foundation Executive Director, and Susan Thorniley, Foundation Secretary who also serves as the School Board's appointed Trustee for the Fairfax County Public Library Board. Every Fairfax County Public School librarian will receive a miniature statuette that may be creatively decorated representing the school and placed on display in the school library.
Three of the larger 4' high Art in the Pages statues were artistically designed by art teachers. Another was created by a 2008 graduate of Lake Braddock High School. Large statues are on permanent display at both Hutchison Elementary School and South County Secondary School.
National
Library Week was first observed in 1958. It is designed to recognize and
support the contribution of libraries and librarians to their communities.
The theme of this year’s celebration is “Worlds connect at your
library."
The celebrations continued with the Read-a-thon program at Tysons Corner on April 14.
