Paul Herbert

Paul Herbert.Local historian and author Paul Herbert was interviewed for BookCast by Fairfax County Public Library Director Sam Clay.

Herbert, a retired federal investigator and president of the Fairfax Historical Society has gathered together many lesser-known episodes from American history in God Knows All Your Names: Stories in American History.

The more than 60 stories are grouped in three sections: The American Revolution, The Civil War and Other Stories. Many of the tales take place in Fairfax County including an attempted slave insurrection years before John Brown’s more famous raid; the history of Lee Highway which “opened” with fanfare in 1923 as a 3,000 mile road from Washington D.C. to San Diego; and the history of Little River Turnpike, the second oldest turnpike in America, built partially by slaves and captured Hessian soldiers.
