Annual GivingTuesday Fundraiser Puts Nearly 200 “Most-Needed” Books on FCPL Shelves

Thanks to the generosity of friends and followers of the Fairfax Library Foundation, 196 books deemed “most-needed” by Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL) are now on their way to library shelves countywide.

2023 marks the fourth year of the Foundation’s unique “Deck the Shelves” fundraiser wherein supporters are challenged each GivingTuesday to purchase books from the Foundation’s Amazon Wish List for donation to FCPL’s collection. Upon arrival at the Library’s Technical Operations facility, each donated book is affixed with a bookplate recognizing its benefactor’s generosity. Donors even have the option of being the first to check out the book they donate once it arrives through the Foundation’s First Loan Program.


This year’s tally of 196 eclipses 2021’s mark of 137 books purchased. The Foundation’s Amazon Wish List is continually refreshed and is accessible for donations—year round—at fairfaxlibraryfoundation.org/get-involved.


GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a counterpoint to Black Friday and Cyber Monday commercialism. The simple idea was to establish a day each year where people are encouraged to do good and make generosity a part of their everyday lives.


Since 1994, the Fairfax Library Foundation has existed solely with the mission to enhance the programs and services of the Fairfax County Public Library, the largest public library system in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Designated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable and educational organization, the Foundation provides supplementary support to the community by providing access to information, technology, innovations, civic engagement and entertainment, and by offering literacy and educational opportunities.
