Fairfax Library Foundation Announces Miriam Smolen as Incoming Chair of the Board of Directors

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Fairfax Library Foundation is excited to announce that Miriam Smolen has been elected chair of the board of directors beginning in 2022-2023. Miriam will replace outgoing Chair, Patricia Reed. She previously served as the board’s special projects lead.

Prior to joining the Foundation’s Board of Directors, Miriam served as chair of the Fairfax County Public Library’s Board of Trustees from 2018-2020 as the Providence District representative.


Miriam has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley and a Juris Doctor from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law. She is currently the senior deputy general counsel for the Federal Housing Finance Agency.


Miriam has lived in Fairfax County for over 30 years with her husband Jerry. She has two adult sons – both graduates of Woodson High School – and a Tibetan Terrier named Dali.


Since 1994, the Fairfax Library Foundation has existed solely with the mission to enhance the programs and services of the Fairfax County Public Library, the largest public library system in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Designated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable and educational organization, the Foundation provides supplementary support to the community by providing access to information, technology, innovations, civic engagement and entertainment, and by offering literacy and educational opportunities.
